Why Costa Rica

By Keith Macartney / October 10th, 2012 / No Comments

If I could sum up in only a couple of words “Why Costa Rica” it would without question be what Costa Ricans say – “Pura Vida”. There is no literal definition of this phrase, but to sum it up – the words “Pure Life”, or more accurately – “Full of Life” truly come to mind. The people of Costa Rica, its citizens as well as those who visit and leave as well as those who visit and stay in this beautiful, majestic country are continually reminded of those two words. There are several other common meanings for Pura Vida – excellent, all is good and “cooool man”. I guess the best way to wrap it up is to say ‘We are only here for a short time, so spread some cheer; and then you are gone’. Bank tellers, restaurant servers, street vendors and taxi drivers will all greet you with this saying as well as bidding good-bye. Pura Vida is not only a saying, it is a way of life. Everything in Costa Rica is Pura Vida!

But Costa Rica is so much more than that — its beauty, climate, fun, relaxation and lifestyle, just to mention a few. Beauty – the wildlife, the flora, the rain forests and the Caribbean – the overall scenery. And of course – the people.

The climate in Costa Rica is quite varied, from the southern Pacific to the Caribbean Sea, with the Central Valley in between, each having its own climate, and each having several micro-climates within. From lush rainforests and plains of splendor, Costa Rica’s weather is indeed tropical, in a variety of ways.
Fun – did I say fun? Oh yes, there is a lot of that to be had. Whether you like nature trails, water sports or just plain excitement, Costa Rica is able to offer almost everything you would want (unless it were related to that 4-letter word – SNOW). For those water enthusiasts, there is a wide variety of activities, from white-water rafting on the Pacuare River to deep-sea fishing, scuba diving to world-class surfing. We would prefer not to hear anyone say “I’m bored”. How about the occasional zip-line tour? Anyone up to growing a set of wings?

Are you a nature lover? If you are, you are in luck. Costa Rica has the world’s most diverse number of plant and animal species, and still counting. Reptiles, monkeys and birds – OH MY! There are thousands of things for you to see. Then there are such arrays of flowers growing wild (or in your own flower garden) throughout the country. Have you every truly enjoyed multiple days off in a row – like months at a time? You can keep busy all the time, but wouldn’t it be great to be able to wake up at the crack of whenever – whenever the mood strikes – sitting back in your chase lounge overlooking the coast, seeing the ships as they come in and out of port, watching the birds soaring with the air currents? What would your day of R&R look like? Going to the Caribbean for a fun dip in the waves or wading along the riverbanks? How about reading Dr. Seuss in Spanish to the local children or getting wrapped up in a good Tom Clancy novel? If you’ve never had the time to take on that hobby you’ve always wanted to do since you were a kid – now you can.

As far as lifestyle – can’t help you there, that is your department. All that can be suggested is how you interpret how yours should look like, then live it out. I can say that all the pieces are there for you to take your life to the next level. You know what your interests are; you know what you like to do. What I can tell you though is that almost anything you want to do in Costa Rica – it will most likely cost you a fair amount less than what you currently are paying, so get used to spending less (except time) while enjoying more – living out your dreams in Costa Rica.
